Small dishes like this one were frequently carried by salesmen in order to show the pattern of the dishes they were selling without having to carry a lot of regular size dishes with them. Some of these sample pieces were also used by children as doll's dishes. The patterns on children's toy dishes frequently copied adult dish patterns.
Normally a sample dish would be marked on its back with its displayed pattern. The markings on the back of this plate are "Ra No 64490 England". This would imply that this was probably a salesman's sample.
This plate has a navy blue geometric design around its outer edge and a navy blue floral pattern in its center.
